Matthew B.A. Remedios
Introduction to Our Law Firm, Remedios Lawyers Law Corporation, by Matthew B.A. Remedios, Principal Lawyer & Managing Director
Since 1989, the Remedios legal practice has grown alongside the business and cultural communities it serves in British Columbia and across international markets. Our legal practice spans mergers and acquisitions, corporate and commercial law, real estate, litigation, estates, immigration, and regulatory matters, with a consistent focus on practical and effective outcomes.
My practice sits within that foundation, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, commercial transactions, real estate development, business structuring, and disputes. My tasks often involve taking transactions from early-stage discussions through to execution - structuring joint ventures, advising on acquisitions, and working through financing and closing. Recent matters have included acquisitions in the hospitality sector, real estate development projects, and transactions involving green technology and biotechnology businesses.
A significant portion of our practice involves cross-border work. That has included time spent in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Macau, and other parts of the Indo-Pacific, working directly with clients, investors, and counterparties. In some instances, that has meant sitting across the table with a founder refining deal terms late into the evening, or walking a development site with local partners to understand the asset beyond what is reflected in reports. In others, it has involved coordinating diligence across jurisdictions where timing, language, and local practice all shape the outcome.
That work reflects the broader direction of our firm. Remedios Lawyers maintains longstanding relationships across the Asia-Pacific, ASEAN, and the Americas, and continues to support clients entering Canada as well as Canadian businesses expanding abroad. We have acted for a wide range of clients, including entrepreneurs, developers, private investors, financial institutions, and multinational companies operating across sectors such as real estate, energy, healthcare, technology, and manufacturing.
Our firm’s work is closely connected to the communities it serves. Our practice is rooted in Indo-Pacific and multicultural business communities across the Lower Mainland. My involvement includes work with organizations such as the Indo-Pacific Foundation of Canada, the Macau Canada Business Association, the Casa De Macau Club, the Chinese Entrepreneurs Society, and the Filipino Legacy Society of Canada. These roles involve advising on governance and contributing to initiatives that bring together business leaders, investors, and community members across jurisdictions.
These connections often extend beyond formal settings. Business relationships frequently begin in community events or trade delegations and continue across borders over time. It is not uncommon for an initial introduction in Vancouver or overseas to develop into ongoing business in Macau, or other parts of China.
Alongside my practice, there has been a growing recognition of the challenges faced by younger individuals and early-stage businesses. Many are entering the market at a point where key legal issues arise - purchasing a first home, entering into a lease (residential or commercial), starting a business, or navigating employment relationships - while at the same time facing financial constraints driven by a rising cost of living and limited access to resources.
In response, in 2026 our firm established Access Remedios (Access). The program is designed to address access to legal services for individuals and entrepreneurs at an early stage who are often navigating these issues for the first time. Access is intended to provide qualifying individuals with the ability to obtain high-quality legal services at a stage where timely advice can have a lasting impact. The focus is on practical issues that arise at the outset of personal and business life, including tenancy (residential or commercial), first-time home ownership, small business formation, and employment matters.
As the Managing Director and Principal Lawyer of Remedios Lawyers, my focus remains on continuing the legacy and values of the Remedios legal practice while focusing on core strengths and upward growth. That includes both international transactional work and initiatives such as Access, which are grounded in the needs of the communities the firm serves.
Our direction forward remains consistent - to build on established relationships, continue developing cross-border capabilities, and provide legal services that are practical, responsive, and accessible.
